Death... and me

Chapter 3359 Hurting Feelings

Chapter 3359  Hurting Feelings

Through Roan, Herbert received the words on the obelisk by a Divine Sense Message.

Turns out Herbert indeed was aware of those words, and his expression changed when they were shown to him. 'This...' He glanced at Roan for a moment, finding it awkward to speak. 'Fred... probably won't like what is written there...'

Back inside the amphora, Rean was still waiting for the answer from Herbert. Even if Herbert couldn't translate, he could try some other method or whatnot to see if he could get past the obelisk and its barrier, which was stopping him from reaching the door behind. Worst-case scenario, he would just enter the Dimensional Realm and leave this place.

Yet, it didn't take long for Roan to pass on Rean the message from Herbert. 'You gotta be kidding me!' Rean once again looked at those words on the obelisk, now aware of their meaning.

The Mist Library was said to have the secrets of the centurions. That much wasn't wrong. It was also true that knowledge about formations was necessary, but it wasn't all. Turns out that for the third challenge, it had nothing to do with formations. In fact, it was hard to even call it a proper challenge. It looked more like an exchange instead.

-Third Challenge: Provide the Obelisk with all your self-awareness memories. Only a clean slate is worth the Mist Library's contents.-

Outside, Herbert remembered a few things related to the Fourth Centurion's records. 'Our ancestor left many records, several of them regarding the Mist Library that transformed them. But there was one specific mention that I never cared much about. He said in there that although Fidi-Lu opened the path to them, Fidi-Lu had changed. None of the Four Centurions knew why or how, but they could tell that the Fidi-Lu they knew was somewhat different. Fidi-Lu never told them what happened and simply said that it was better if they didn't know, so none of Fidi-Lu's companions insisted.'

Herbert sighed. 'Now I understand why he changed. In fact, it wasn't that Fidi-Lu changed, but that Fidi-Lu wasn't the same Fidi-Lu that took the trials.'

Roan found it strange. 'But if Fidi-Lu lost his life memories, how did he know his companions after coming out? From the looks of it, he knew who the other four centurions were and even helped them enter the Mist Library, right?'

Rean had an answer for that. 'Actually, it isn't very hard. Fidi-Lu probably only had to leave behind some records regarding himself. The new Fidi-Lu woke up by those records' side and watched everything. The words are pretty clear. It only talks about your memories of self-awareness, so it isn't like you will return to be a baby. You just won't know who you are, but you will retain your intelligence and maturity. It's quite like an amnesia. In the end, Fidi-Lu decided to believe the records left behind by himself and helped his friends. Of course, this is just a theory, but it should work.'

Herbert was silent. He couldn't really tell Rean to lose himself for the sake of opening the path for him. Of course, it wasn't like Herbert didn't want it. He barely knows Rean's group, so why would he care if Rean... or Fred... loses himself? It's just that asking for such a thing from Rean was meaningless. No idiot in this world would ever exchange their self-awareness, the very thing that makes them. Someone could appear right now in front of Herbert and ask him for his self-awareness in exchange for becoming the most powerful expert to have existed. Herbert wouldn't think twice to reject that offer. What is the point of being the strongest if you are not there anymore?

'Come out of there,' Roan suddenly said to Rean. 'A self-aware 'you' is already annoying; the last thing I need is an empty shell that will be even more annoying to deal with.'

Rean's mouth twitched. Some might think Roan was being considerate or that he didn't really want Rean to disappear. However, Rean knew better. He knew Roan truly thought it would be even more annoying to deal with the aftermath. It was that simple.

Still, Rean didn't come out straight away. 'Sister Orb, how would this obelisk wipe out my self-awareness and the memories that make me? Wouldn't the system protect against such a thing?'

[That's correct... I think. To be honest, the system protects you against attacks that you and it consider to be harmful. Slave seals, mental attacks, soul manipulation, etc. But, if you decide to take this offer, you would be setting it as something you want. So, perhaps the system won't stop the obelisk or whatever it is from taking everything from your head. Simply put, it is not worth the risk.]

'That's not all,' Roan added. 'Even if the system stops the obelisk from taking your self-awareness memories away, that might actually cause the test to fail. Fidi-Lu didn't fail the tests, so Herbert doesn't have any records of what the punishment for failure is.'

Rean felt annoyed, speaking his mind out loud. " You know what? Fuck this shit! We got what we came for anyway. Besides, this challenge is dumb as fuck! Who was the idiot who thought of it? I'll tell ya, this had to be one of the worst ideas for a challenge ever created in all Universes in existence. Obviously, I would rather fail! I'm out of here!"

*Crack, crack, crack...*

Yet, before Rean could enter the Celestial Soul Dimensional Realm... Out of nowhere, the obelisk began to crack, the runes on it shattered, and the whole barrier started to dissipate.

*Brummm!*

Finally, everything crumbled down, and the passage to the door behind was cleared.

"Errr... what just happened?" Rean couldn't help but ask. He absolutely did nothing!

Then, several signs appeared all around, this time containing a language Rean recognized without problems.

-No one asked your fucking opinion! Just get the fuck out of here!-

Rean was speechless. Did he just... hurt the Mist Library's feelings? Wait, did it have feelings? He didn't know what to do anymore.
