Who Would Fall in Love After Being Reborn?
Chapter 9: Spending Money PrudentlyTL: Etude
Warm sunlight streamed through the large floor-to-ceiling windows of the library, casting a soft golden hue on Feng Nanshu’s smooth long hair and thick eyelashes.
She sat upright and proper, quiet and demure.
Her slender fingers gently turned the pages of her book, her bright eyes reflecting purity.
After finishing a page, she would nibble on a shrimp chip, making a crisp crunching sound, before turning to the next page.
This routine continued until the bag of shrimp chips gradually emptied.
It wasn’t until Feng Nanshu reached for the last chip that she realized it was the end of the bag. She then looked up at Jiang Qin.
“I won’t eat anymore, you finish them,” she said.
Her eyes sparkled with pleasure as she popped the last chip into her mouth and turned the page of her book.
Jiang Qin watched her for a long time, realizing that Feng Nanshu wasn’t joking. She really agreed to lend him money.
But why did he feel it was so absurd?
Shouldn’t there be a promissory note? Or at least ask what the money was for and when he would repay it?
Jiang Qin, possessing the soul of a 38-year-old man, should have seen through the innocence of high school students like Feng Nanshu, but he genuinely couldn’t understand her actions.
It was no surprise, as he had never encountered a wealthy woman before his rebirth.
Maybe this is just how wealthy women are.
At 4:30 in the afternoon, Feng Nanshu suddenly placed a bookmark in her book, stood up, smoothed her skirt, and returned the book to the shelf.
She always left at this time each day, a sign of strict home rules.
However, this time, before leaving, she paused and turned to wave goodbye to Jiang Qin.
She wasn’t that cold after all…
Jiang Qin watched her leave, then turned to gaze out of the large window. Through the glass, he clearly saw the black Bentley parked downstairs.
The driver, wearing white gloves, respectfully held the car door open, while the bodyguard stood on the other side, his expression serious and alert.
Feng Nanshu quietly walked out of the library and slipped into the car, disappearing into the twilight streets with the roar of the engine.
“’Golden House’ and ‘Jade Face’ is actually the same person…”
“…”
“I suddenly feel a bit hungry. I should head home.”
Jiang Qin put the book “Guide to Living Off Others” back on the shelf and rode his bike back to Hongrong Homes in North Second Road. At the community entrance, he bought a basket of steamed buns.
It was Wednesday, a workday.
With Mrs. Yuan Youqin being an employee at the government guesthouse, and Mr. Jiang Zhenghong working at the Health Bureau, the house was likely empty, so he settled for some steamed buns.
Having eaten his fill of takeaways and instant noodles in his previous life, he was no longer picky about food quality.
Moreover, the shop’s buns were delicious – thin skin, generous filling, and even a decade later, they opened several branches.
Jiang Qin took a bun from the plastic bag, bit into it, and enjoyed the hot, greasy flavor. It was the same old recipe, the same familiar taste.
But with the weather so hot, he started sweating after just two buns.
Jiang Qin tied up the plastic bag, planning to finish them at home.
At seven in the evening, the night quietly enveloped the surroundings.
Mr. Jiang Zhenghong returned home with two plastic bags, kicked off his slippers, and collapsed onto the sofa, his forehead dripping with sweat and panting for breath, hastily calling Jiang Qin to bring him water.
“Dad, where did you go? Why are you so exhausted?”
“Your mom said the vegetables are cheaper at Nan Village market, so I rode for forty minutes to buy a bunch. They’re all your favorites.”
Jiang Qin placed a glass of water in front of him: “Isn’t it just a few cents cheaper? Is it worth the effort? Are we that poor?”
Jiang Zhenghong took a sip of water, sighing contentedly: “It’s not about being poor. You’re going to college soon, and there’s the matter of marriage. There will be many expenses in the future, so we must save where we can. We can’t be reckless with money!”
As soon as he finished speaking, the door creaked open again.
Mrs. Yuan Youqin entered with a shopping bag from the department store, humming a tune with a triumphant expression.
The father and son exchanged a glance.
“What did you buy?”
“Our colleague Xu told me the department store had a half-price sale on wool coats. I got a great deal!”
Jiang Zhenghong widened his eyes: “A wool coat? How much did you spend?”
Mrs. Yuan Youqin, beaming with pride, said: “The original price was 888, but I got it for 488.”
“Is this what you meant by not spending recklessly?” Jiang Qin was stunned.
“That wasteful woman! It’s the peak of summer; why are you buying a wool coat?”
“What do you know? It’s on sale because of the summer heat!”
Jiang Zhenghong asserted his authority: “Jiang Qin has finished his college entrance exams. There will be expenses for celebration and tuition fees. We have many costs ahead.”
Mrs. Yuan Youqin walked into the living room, changing her shoes: “Aren’t those my own words? And did you go to Nan Village market as I asked?”
“Of course, I did. I calculated that the vegetables there are much cheaper than our local store. I saved over twenty yuan.”
“So, we saved three hundred and twenty today?”
Jiang Zhenghong was slow to catch on: “Where does three hundred come from?”
Mrs. Yuan Youqin held up her shopping bag: “I bought a coat worth 888 for 488. Doesn’t that save us three hundred?”
“Yuan Youqin, I must say, your spending logic is flawed.”
“Jiang Zhenghong, I haven’t bought many clothes in all our years of marriage, and you’re complaining about one wool coat?”
Jiang Qin watched amusedly, finding this rare family dispute heartwarming.
His father was still in his prime, not yet graying at fifty-three or driving for Didi to earn a down payment, fainting in the car.
His mother was still youthful and loved beauty, shopping at department stores without scrimping on meat to save money.
This was certainly the happiest aspect of his rebirth.
But his laughter soon drew both parents’ ire, each giving him a disdainful look.
“Jiang Qin, what are you laughing at? Do you also think I shouldn’t have bought this wool coat?”
Jiang Qin composed himself: “Mom, I’ll earn big money in the future. You won’t have to buy discounted clothes anymore, and Dad won’t need to go to distant markets.”
Mrs. Yuan Youqin’s expression softened: “That’s my good son. Don’t be like your father, always pinching pennies.”
“I’m not pinching pennies…”
Jiang Zhenghong’s voice faded, clearly lacking confidence. He then turned to find his wife unpacking the shopping bag, which contained rolls of toilet paper.
“What’s this?”
“Things from the guesthouse. The boss said to replace it all, so I took some. You think you’re the only one who knows how to save?”
Mrs. Yuan Youqin retorted and headed into the kitchen.
Jiang Zhenghong was flabbergasted, thinking to himself that this was entrapment!
