People who are running straight back to their houses regret doing so.

Not because leaving Grant and the other warriors made them feel guilty, but because the Singing Lady landed right at the entrance, blocking their path. Seemed like she had been watching, somehow, and aimed the entrance instantly.

Many stumbled backward and screamed, terrified for their lives.

But when she fired the lump of energy at the main ruin, they realized running was futile.

Kaboom!

Under their fearful gazes, the main ruin that took up a huge space was shattered.

One beam and the entire structure exploded completely.

It was robust, sustaining the test of time without a crack, but the explosion flattened it.

All that was left of the Mahkam Ruin was rubble and dirt.

A building with a rich history was destroyed as easily as that, with a flick of a finger.

But what the people truly feared, the cause for their despair, wasn’t because of the Singing Lady’s overwhelming power. It was the flickering bubble instead. Naturally, the explosion of voidal energy unleashed a powerful shockwave that spread throughout the ruin.

Other than the surroundings that were uprooted, the bubble was also damaged.

It was a sign that the shockwave also damaged their Obelisk of Life.

For a moment there, the people and the Singing Lady paused.

All gazed upwards at the flickering bubble.

Then, with a loud electrical sound, the bubble disappeared, and the first streak of the Black Rain landed inside the ruin. Once the bubble was gone, nothing was stopping the Black Rift—and the Black Rain from creeping in.

Feeling the sting from the Black Rain, some people tried to take cover.

However, the Singing Lady was fast enough to react.

She created a cage that kept them standing on an open space, exposed to the rain.

“Raargghkk!”

People screamed.

“No, no, no! Someone, please kill me!”

People begged.

“It hurts! It hurts!!”

People writhed.

Most of them were mainly warriors at the Ascendant Spirit-rank or low Immortal Spirit-rank, none of them could survive long under the Black Rain. Some of them even began to mutate, metamorphosing into a full-blown Voidal Monster.

Once they were reborn anew, as monsters, they began attacking the others blindly.

Friends killed each other.

Families killed each other.

Comrades killed each other.

It was a bloody and melancholy sight, one that not many could watch with eyes wide open.

But what was sickening about the situation was that the people could see themselves turning with their own two eyes, and once they were turned, they were still conscious, remaining awake while their bodies weren’t their own anymore.

Since the mind was the last part of the metamorphosis, they retained their mind longer.

Longer than their bodies could remain normal.

Due to that, in the first few minutes, they could see themselves killing their loved ones.

Such a fate was horrifying.

It was the reason why the Sky City exists: to prevent something like this from happening.

But not all could be prevented.

“Kyaargh!!”

“Raarkhh!”

At the center of the chaos and dread, the Singing Lady spread her arms to the side, relishing under the Black Rain that was empowering her very being with each drop. For her, the chaos around her was akin to music.

Every pitch of scream was a different note, playing solely for her pleasure.

Like delicate keynotes weaving a hymn meant for her ears alone.

It was something that only she could enjoy.

Far ahead, Grant and the army reached the entrance and instantly lost their morale.

“No…” Grant whispered in despair, his voice trembled as a warrior held him upright. The sight of the entrance drained the color from his face. The calm, composed mask he always wore for his people began to crack.

His lips quivered and his eyes were wide with disbelief, “No… this can’t be happening.”

Most of the warriors with a support-type Soul Artifact were with him.

Because of that, many could block the incoming Black Rain for a moment.

But that wasn’t the case for the others.

Seeing how his beloved people, thousands of them spreading out in a run from the newly transformed monsters, he lost the strength in his one leg—and slipped to the ground. He was devastated, and a single tear drizzled down his face.

Even the warriors with him wept, seeing some of their families, friends, and comrades in the chaos.

Just who would’ve thought the Singing Lady was inside the ruin all along?

‘I must stay strong,’ Grant thought inside his mind. ‘I must stay strong for my people…’

Roar!!

“Kyaarhh!”

‘I must cling to hope, I can’t let go… We can still survive…’ He thought desperately.

Despite the situation, he can’t lose hope, or the ruin is finished.

It was his sole task as the leader to keep leading until the bitter end, no matter how hard it was.

But his ideal and reality are too separate things.

Clinging to hope was easier said than done, especially when faced with such despair in front of him.

‘We… We’re finished,’ He sobbed harder, tears drowning his face. ‘Hope is already long gone…’

Glancing to the side, at a dagger that somehow landed near him—Grant reached his hand to grab it and pointed it at his neck. He would rather die while he was still normal than turn into a Voidal Monster.

But as he was about to do that, a Voidal Monster noticed his helpless condition.

It was hunched and had fingers that were eerily long and sharp.

Smiling evilly, devoid of any self-conscious thought, the Voidal Monster turned and lunged at him.

Seeing this, Grant’s body froze, and his breath was stuck in his throat.

Just as the Voidal Monster lunged toward him, something crashed from above hard.

It obliterated the Voidal Monster in an instant.

Grant was stunned, but slowly, he tilted his head up, only to find one of the Werewolf Voidal Knights standing there, its form towering and still crackling with power. He saw it above the ruin earlier, and it came to his rescue.

It was One.

Noticing that One was against them, the new Voidal Monsters attacked.

Protecting Grant behind him, One encased his body with his shadowy wings, gathering voidal energy, and once his wings were glowing and ready, he unfurled them again. His feathers burst forth, stabbing the Voidal Monsters in front of him and killing them on the spot.

None of them stood a chance.

One was at the Immortal Spirit-rank, a strong one at that, too.

Blinking his eyes, Grant realized something.

Hope hasn’t been lost—the battle wasn’t over.

Rex was still alive.

Just then, a symphony of astral screams exploded.

Even though it was distant, and couldn’t be compared to the screaming from thousands of people, the one who needed to notice the most could hear it. The Singing Lady—who was basking in the chaos she created, frowned when she heard these screams.

From her acute hearing, this was a misplay in the hymn, a note that shouldn’t have been there.

Averting her gaze from the sky, she looked into the far distance and felt her blood boil.

On the spot where the border between the Mahkap Ruin and the outside was supposed to be, a figure that she instantly recognized stood on top of a tree branch. Rex was standing there, arms spread to the side, and boasted a look that clearly taunting.

He has no fear on his face, only anticipation.

But what infuriated the Singing Lady the most was the sight above him.

Viora was suspended mid-air above Rex, and she was holding onto a golden chain where the chorus-bearers—the Singing Lady’s direct minions, were bound like a necklace. Being held in this manner, hanging only by their collarbones, was excruciating.

All of them cried on, beckoning for the Singing Lady to save them.

“Round two!” Rex shouted loudly—his eyes glowing bright. “Now you’re going against me!”

Almost instantly, the Singing Lady lost all reasoning.

She forgot what she was doing and instantly turned into her ghost form.

Going straight for Rex.

Upon seeing this, Rex nodded inwardly—she had taken the bait.

He didn’t smile, and there was no sign of insanity like earlier—only a straight face and anger.

One that even Viora could feel radiating from him.

As soon as the Singing Lady chased after him with incredible speed, Rex leaped upward and snatched the golden chain from Viora before sprinting away from the ruin. He was luring the Singing Lady away—helping the people of the ruin to rally and recover.

Displaying such barbarity, his plan worked.

The Singing Lady was enraged to the point that she ignored Viora and chased straight after Rex.

“He’s something else… Who could’ve thought something like this?” Viora looked at him and shook her head. Then, she turned away and went into the ruin. Near the entrance, she was able to spot the one she was looking for.

Grant was kneeling there, guarded by One.

“Grant,” Viora called, landing near him. “Snap out of it and get up! This is your chance!”

Upon hearing this, Grant tilted his head, “Eh…?”

Clearly, he was still dazed at what had happened, or perhaps the Black Rain was taking hold of him.

Viora landed a crisp slap across his face, empowered by nothing but her raw strength, strong enough to pull Grant back to reality before she grabbed him by the collar. Seeing his shocked expression, she pulled him close, “You are their leader, so tell them what to do. If you don’t, a lot more people are going to die!”

Blinking his eyes, Grant returned to reality and turned towards his people.

Most of them were crying, lying on the ground wounded, or fighting the new Voidal Monsters.

It was chaotic and all over the place, but with the Werewolf Voidal Knights’ help, there were some who were idle—and didn’t know what to do. Grant needed to handle them, “Get back on your feet! It’s not over yet!”

His voice rang, forcing some heads to turn towards him.

“Regroup to me—move!” Grant continued before he pointed around him. “Get into formation! For those who have the Mahkam Shield, summon it right now and block the Black Rain! Keep a tight formation, don’t let the Voidal Monsters break through!”

Following his instruction, an order began to form.

People rallied and got into formation, but it wasn’t enough.

Most of them were still on the ground and not following his orders, mainly due to hopelessness.

Despite having only one leg, Grant approached the nearest warrior, who was still sitting.

He stumbled and fell, but he continued forward, crawling like a lizard.

Once he reached the supposed warrior, he rose to his knees.

Then, Grant grabbed the warrior’s shoulder and yanked him away from his dead wife.

“Get it together, the ruin needs you, the others need you, I need you!” Grant exclaimed vigorously.

“But…” The warrior sniffled, pointing at his wife. “I lost everything… She’s the only one I have…”

“If you don’t fight right now,” Grant continued—his burning eyes stared straight at the warrior. “You will not even have her corpse to mourn, eaten by these monsters! Better yet, you don’t even be alive to mourn her! Her presence will disappear alongside you! Do you want that?!”

Upon hearing this, the warrior paused before shaking his head.

He didn’t want his wife to be forgotten.

“Then get up and fight! Live!” Grant shouted. “Help me help the others, and then we can all mourn!”

Regaining a sliver of his willpower, the warrior wiped his tears mixed with the Black Rain.

Gritting his teeth, sadness replaced by anger, he stood up and helped Grant to get into formation.

From the side, Viora, who was watching this, nodded.

Grant was essential to rally the people, and it seemed Rex knew that already.

Sending One and the other Werewolf Voidal Knights to help, he was making sure Grant didn’t die.

“It’s my turn now…” Viora mumbled as her body pulsed with power.

Since Crimoria, Linthia, along April were trapped on the Forsaken Tower’s rooftop, Viora was the only one other than Rex who could help the Mahkam Ruin. She wasn’t offensively strong. As she stated, her Soul Artifact was only a support-type.

But that doesn’t mean she was too weak to help.

Swish!

Viora’s body gleamed with sunlight as she floated.

Her eyes turned into two suns, and with a wave of her arms, a beautiful weave of golden energy spread across the entire area. From a bird’s-eye view, there was a dome of sunlight near the center, and anyone who was within the dome was being healed rapidly.

Even those who were experiencing a Voidal Metamorphosis weren’t an exception.

All were healed, and more people joined the formation.
