As soon as the key was turned, the Forsaken Tower was activated.

Rex froze when he read the notification.

It was then, his instincts kicked in, sensing danger that the others couldn’t sense.

Suddenly, four small portals appeared and gathered energy, facing the others’ backs.

He recalled these small portals, it was the same one that the guardian tower summoned.

Recognizing that a beam would be fired from each of them, Rex’s will to protect fueled his body with strength. He lunged at April and Linthia in a split second and pulled them out of the way.

Swish!

Once the beams were fired, Linthia and April were already out of their tracks.

Viora’s power shielded her perfectly, while Crimoria was fast enough to react.

“Grrggh!”

But Rex grunted in pain as there was a fifth one from behind that aimed at him, and through bad luck, the beam that should’ve struck Viora was deflected by her power, and pierced his calf.

Realizing what happened, the others rushed to check on him.

However, his attention was not on them.

Behind the notification warning him of the activation, the scanning of the tower’s foundation was completed. Instantly, the System detailed all he wanted to know. It was quite long, but Rex read it fast enough to know exactly what the Forsaken Tower was.

As soon as he reached the bottom, the muscles in his legs bulged and he leaped skyward.

Despite his condition, he managed to leap quite high.

Right beside him, reacting almost as fast as him—Viora also has the same idea.

Her instincts warned her of an impending doom, prompting her to also jump.

Rex and Viora managed to leap high enough to avoid an azure barrier forming and enclosing the top of the Forsaken Tower. On the other hand, Linthia and Crimoria weren’t fast enough, or didn’t sense what was going on, so they were late to react.

Swish!

Once the barrier was formed, the top was sealed completely.

Linthia and Crimoria were trapped inside.

Meanwhile, Rex and Viora stumbled onto the edge of the barrier.

Making contact with the barrier burned their skin, and then, they began free-falling.

It was a steep drop, one that even Immortal Spirits wouldn’t be able to come out unscathed.

Rex, in his condition, would certainly not survive the fall, but Viora was there.

Channeling her life energy, her entire body glowed with a golden hue as she caught Rex and shot a gush of energy from her hand, slowing down their fall. Despite her quickness, the two suffered a rough fall that forced a painful groan out of their mouths.

Viora rolled on the ground, her pristine appearance was now stained with dirt and dust.

Once she came to a halt, her gaze shot up—searching for Rex.

Coughing a couple of times, she forced herself to stand and approached Rex.

As she knelt to check on him, she was startled by another explosion coming from the ruin—and this time, the voidal energy became even more evident, clearer, “Just what is going on? This energy, this… this power, it’s almost identical to the Singing Lady from before…”

“It’s because it’s the Singing Lady,” Rex answered and rolled to face the dark sky.

Blood rolled down his lips as he breathed unevenly.

Now that he had found the foundation of the tower, he learned what the tower was.

“The Forsaken Tower is as we thought, a shelter, but… but it’s a special kind of shelter.” He continued.

From the way the Forsaken Tower was constructed, they assumed it was a shelter, and they were correct. It was a shelter built by the Mahkam Ruin’s ancestors—a safe haven in case of an emergency.

People could take shelter inside and have protection from catastrophes.

Such as ongoing wars or natural disasters.

But it also has another purpose.

On top of being a shelter, it could also be used as a training space.

A vengeful training space.

Based on the System’s analysis, the Forsaken Tower naturally absorbs voidal energy and life energy, and changes it into a purer kind of life energy—making its inside free from impurities than the outside, suitable for training.

Every time the maximum capacity was reached, its ability to change the absorbed energy lessened.

Thus, the purity inside could be impaired.

In order to battle this natural deterioration, the tower has a self-cleansing mechanism.

Once the level of impurity within the tower reached a certain extent—it would flush out all of the gathered energy and start the absorption process all over again. It was what caused the dark tide that blew out of the Forsaken Tower.

Since the impure energy was being flushed out, it has a dizzying effect.

Voidal Monsters aren’t influenced, but people would be influenced.

From that explanation alone, Rex realized that since the flushing process was harsh, some of the Voidal Monsters that were inhabiting the tower got flushed out. Exactly like what he, and the army experienced earlier.

Earlier, when the gate was opened, the cleansing process started.

More than half of the soldiers got blown out, and that was also what happened to the Voidal Monsters.

All of them got blown and carried by the dark tide, all the way to the Mahkam Ruin.

It seemed that each time it occurred, the Mahkam Ruin’s protective bubble was also influenced, allowing this impure energy to seep through, which was the dark tide. Upon hearing this, Viora frowned, “Then what about the Singing Lady? How does she fit into all of this?”

“She wanted to activate the tower and use it for her benefit,” Rex answered weakly.

Sometime in the past, the Singing Lady settled in the Forsaken Tower.

Perhaps the amount of energy inside of it made her stay, but whatever the reason, she stayed behind.

As her power grew, the dark tide became more frequent as the tower mistook her as impurity within it, and commenced—the self-cleansing mechanism. “I assumed the enhancement from the tower declined when the Singing Lady reached—the Master Immortal Spirit rank,” Rex stated with a cough. “So, she wanted to activate the tower to resume her growth.”

“To do that, she needed the activate the array in the ruin…” Rex trailed off, recalling Grant’s necklace.

Moments earlier, on the border.

Grant and the people of the ruin watched from a safe distance, as Rex easily got through the guardian tower. Despite attacking during nighttime, with the three tower guardians active, he easily got to the main entrance.

It was surprising, but this strengthened their hope.

Then, not long after, the dark tide came.

Obviously, with most of them losing hope of a better future—the people ran, with only a few brave ones staying behind. Grant tried his hardest to stop them and keep them in check, but none of them listened.

All of them would rather run back to their cubical home.

Regardless, he needed to make do with what he had.

Despite the wavering spirit of his soldiers and the fact that seeing the Voidal Monsters closing in within the dark tide brought back nightmares from the time he was forced to fight them in the past, Grant gritted his teeth and stood his ground.

The number of people he lost was beyond counting—but each one of them stayed and haunted his mind.

But even so, he commanded his soldiers to stand their ground.

Almost as if it could sense the trouble, one of the Werewolf Voidal Knights stepped on the way.

Its massive stature was akin to a bulwark that would protect Grant and the soldiers behind it.

Regardless of the incoming dark tide, the Werewolf Voidal Knight roared and clashed against the dark tide as its Alpha instructed. It slapped and hacked away at Voidal Monsters as if they were nothing.

Having an Immortal Spirit level of strength, it could easily fend off the dark tide.

With its help, Grant and the few who stayed behind needed only to confront a few Voidal Monsters.

In fact, their task shifted significantly.

Realizing that there were soldiers who got blown away, soldiers from Rex’s army, they decided to help them—and leave the Voidal Monsters for the Werewolf Voidal Knights to take care of. As the dark tide came to pass, for the first time, Grant lost not one of his people.

He clutched his necklace, prompting Dhamar to witness this.

‘He can do it…’ Grant thought, his entire body trembling with excitement. ‘Lord Rex can do it!’

From the looks of it, Rex would actually be able to pull this off and end the Forsaken Tower’s situation.

Even those who were hesitant and depressed began to experience the feeling of hope again.

Some even outright returned to the formation.

“I have a wife and a son here,” One of them said, wiping his frightened tears. “I have to fight.”

“You’re right. How can I hide if my family is on the line?” Another joined.

For once in over ten years, things started to look as they once did, hopeful and full of vigor,

Grant was seeing it with his own two eyes, the sign of chance for the better, and he became emotional and more determined to see it through. After a moment, the Forsaken Tower boomed with splashes of a battle.

Clearly, Rex was confronting the Singing Lady.

It was a tense moment, a minute that would determine his and the ruin’s future.

Not long after that, the Singing Lady’s aura disappeared while Rex’s aura was still there, albeit faint.

Just that alone sent an uproar through the entire ruin—those who watched and focused on the tower let out a howl of triumph, Rex obviously won, and things would get better. The Mahkam Ruin placed their hope on Rex, and was repaid for it.

Even Grant allowed himself to shed a tear.

A tear of happiness.

Finally, there was someone who could pull them out of the deep sea of hopelessness.

However, as Grant was about to cheer with his people, celebrating Rex’s victory—things took a turn for the worse. A loud explosion resounded, blasting a forceful shockwave across the ruin, and forcing everyone to snap their heads in its direction.

“That direction… isn’t that?” Grant frowned.

But then, a loud screech that was hauntingly beautiful reverberated through the entire ruin.

One that drained all colors from the Mahkam Ruin’s people.

“Grant!” A man who seemed to be coming from the direction of the explosion shouted, running as fast as he could towards Grant. “Grant! It’s the Singing Lady… She’s inside! All this time—she was hiding inside the mine!”

“No…” Grant whispered in disbelief. “Inside the mine?”

On the day of the incident, when Dhamar and a lot of them died within the mine, Grant decided to close it up for good by collapsing the entrance. It was to respect the dead, as well as the fact that none of the people wanted to mine there again.

What was the point? No need to mine and trade when their ruin would eventually reach its end.

So Grant closed it up.

Not once did he think that the Singing Lady hid there.

“If she’s there, then doesn’t that mean…” Grant’s expression darkened.

If the Singing Lady was there, then that means she sneaked into the ruin during the dark tide back then.

For whatever reason, she finally made her move right now.

“Dear God, help us all…” Grant clutched his necklace’s pendant in his sole hand. “Lord Rex, help us…”

About half a mile away, Rex was now lying on the ground alone.

Viora was already climbing the Forsaken Tower in an attempt to see if she was able to get both Linthia and Crimoria out of the Forsaken Tower. Both were trapped in the tower due to the barrier. If she could pry open the barrier, then they should be able to come out.

But that’s a big if.

She didn’t know if the blessing from the Saintess could help her in this one.

For the second time, he tried getting up, but he couldn’t.

<Warning: It’s advised not to lose consciousness!>

<Warning: It’s advised not to lose con->

Countless warning notifications flooded his vision, prompting Rex to move and finish the quest.

For the second time, he tried getting up—but he couldn’t.

All he could do was lie on the ground, facing the gibbous moon above.

The pain from the Law Predation, coupled with the damage from the fall, as well as the Gradual Penalty, was taking a toll on him. In that moment, he yearned for the moonlight, to regenerate faster, but the Black Rift was too thick for the moonlight to penetrate through.

He couldn’t afford to fail, but the dizziness and the pain were too much.

It seemed… hopeless.

But then, as he was drowning in despair as the notifications kept warning him of the cost for failure, a figure emerged from thin air. Rex, with his remaining strength—turned to look at the figure slowly and sighed.

Naturally, there could only be one entity that could appear and reappear like this.

Even from the evil smile it was wearing, Rex could already tell who it was.

The Invincible Apparition.

“Need help…?” He asked purposefully.
