Chapter 1731: 1588: Dark Emperor, Life-Stealing Shadow

Chapter 1731: Chapter 1588: Dark Emperor, Life-Stealing Shadow

Ning Tianyou rode his Life Blood Beast and stepped through the shattered barrier, his eyes locked fiercely onto Chu Mu.

“So, you’re the guardian of the World Monarch Tree?” Ning Tianyou asked, his gaze fixed on the Demon Flame flickering off Chu Mu’s body.

After the incident at Silent Forest, word spread that a demon man with two types of Demon Flames had taken Ning Man’er away.

Ning Tianyou knew Ning Man’er’s power needed time to grow, so he wasn’t in a hurry to imprison her by his side. After all, mere Xuan Objects alone wouldn’t satisfy Ning Tianyou’s craving for power.

Back then, Ning Tianyou, like everyone else, believed the World Monarch Tree Seed was in Ning Man’er’s possession, never imagining that Ning Man’er herself was the future heir of the World Monarch Tree.

During that time, Ning Tianyou treated her well, hoping to use his guise as her grandfather to deceive her into revealing the whereabouts of the World Monarch Tree Seed. Later, he discovered Ning Man’er seemingly truly had no idea where the seed was.

Without the World Monarch Tree Seed and having lost the ability to nurture Xuan Objects, Ning Tianyou quickly lost interest in her. So, when He Cang took her away, Ning Tianyou barely paid it any mind, even thinking letting her go might reveal the seed’s location someday.

However, things spiraled out of his control. Ning Man’er was taken by a Double Evil Demon and whisked away to a place Ning Tianyou could not trace.

Years passed uneventfully, until New Moon Land suddenly saw the emergence of numerous Immortal-Level Strong Ones. Ning Tianyou abruptly realized Ning Man’er might have fled to New Moon Land and that her Immortal Qi might have nurtured those strong individuals, explaining their sudden appearances.

Glaring at the imposing Demon Flame encasing Chu Mu, Ning Tianyou deeply regretted letting the true heir to the World Monarch Tree escape right before his eyes. If he’d kept Ning Man’er by his side all these years, he might now be at Peak Immortal Level. Instead, her power had been squandered on others!

Indeed, the power held by the demon man before him should have belonged entirely to Ning Tianyou. As he stared at Chu Mu, rage gleamed in his eyes!

“Kid, you’ve got impressive foresight after all,” Ning Tianyou sneered coldly.

Chu Mu ignored Ning Tianyou, his gaze piercing through the arrayed army to fall on Ning Man’er, who was being held by several young Soul Pet Masters.

Ning Man’er kept her head bowed, her hair hanging down to obscure half her face.

Chu Mu shared a spiritual bond with her and naturally understood the torment she was enduring.

She stood motionlessly as though soulless, her entire figure shrouded by a peculiar and sinister shadow.

Chu Mu remained silent; Ning Man’er’s emotions were too chaotic now, and it wouldn’t matter what he said.

At that moment, the shadow surrounding Ning Man’er thickened, silently extending to envelop the surrounding Ning Army members.

Her supposed protector was Ning Zhuang, the current true patriarch of this faction.

Ning Zhuang was an Intermediate Undying-Level Strong One. After Ning Tianyou advanced to High-Immortality Level, Ning Zhuang’s status as patriarch could no longer compare to him.

His task was simple: keep Ning Man’er under watch.

Although New Moon Land was resource-rich, it could never rival the World Monarch Tree.

Ning Zhuang rode upon a Scarlet Demonic Stinger, his attention caught between Chu Mu and Ning Tianyou, oblivious to the unusual shadow spreading beneath his feet.

That shadow swallowed the Scarlet Demonic Stinger’s own shadow and extended to engulf the spirits of several other Soul Immortal-Level Strong Ones nearby.

A shadowy hand emerged, creeping along their bodies to their throats, slowly tightening its grip…

“Hel… help…”

Suddenly, a Soul Immortal Strong One clutched at his throat, his face turning a terrifying shade of ashen blue as he let out a strange, guttural cry.

The others froze for a moment. But as they snapped back to their senses, they discovered similar shadowy hands clutching at the throats of several others, rapidly tightening!

The expressions of these victims stiffened, as if an unforgiving demonic hand had them by the throat, their windpipes on the verge of snapping!

“What’s happening?!” Ning Zhuang roared.

A chaotic commotion erupted around him. When Ning Zhuang turned back, he was alarmed to find Ning Man’er had vanished. In her place stood a dense, black shadow, which stretched forth several arms, each mercilessly gripping the throats of surrounding Soul Immortal-Level Strong Ones.

“Gahhhh!!!!!!!!!”

A horrifying crunch echoed as one Soul Immortal’s neck was wrenched violently by the shadow hand, his body collapsing lifelessly to the ground before he could summon his Soul Pet.

One after another, three or four Soul Immortal-Level Strong Ones met the same fate. The shadowy hand grabbed at them and twisted their throats mercilessly while their Soul Pets similarly succumbed, convulsing inexplicably before falling to the ground.

Ning Zhuang stood dumbstruck, utterly bewildered.

Suddenly, an icy surge of dark power swept over him, chilling him to the bone.

His Scarlet Demonic Stinger grew inexplicably agitated, its shimmering sickle-like limbs thrashing uncontrollably, furiously attacking its own shadow.

Then something horrifying happened—the Scarlet Demonic Stinger’s shadow detached itself from the ground, transforming into a dark, shadowy replica of the Stinger, which viciously turned against the actual Stinger’s body.

Such bizarre phenomena weren’t limited to Ning Zhuang alone. Across the area, thousands of Soul Pets’ shadows came to life, turning violently upon their physical forms!

The shadows wielded significant combat power, nearly equal to their real counterparts. Wherever the shadow army began its offensive, the bloodshed was relentless—gray-black shadows transformed into ghost soldiers, harvesting lives endlessly.

These shadowy ghost soldiers killed without spilling a drop of blood. The victims showed no visible wounds; their windpipes were severed, or their vital spots snapped, or they simply collapsed without warning—lifeless.

Thick, ominous death clouds spread as the corpses piled higher and higher, plunging the army into disorder.

The Little Hiding Dragon’s immense strength had already slaughtered thousands within their ranks, leaving not even their souls intact.

Now, with these eerie shadow creatures rampaging through the army, the soldiers were riddled with terror. Their comrades fell mysteriously, and no one knew who would be next.

The city’s barrier had shattered, opening a broad, unobstructed path for the army to conquer the city. As for those townsfolk on the streets, trampling over them might lead to some gore, but that was expected.

Yet, under the relentless assault of the Ghost Sting Dragon and the sinister shadow beings, their ambition to invade the city had cooled drastically. Thousands upon thousands of soldiers and Soul Pets lay dead, and they soon realized the city might remain unclaimed—because they all might perish first.

“Ning Zhuang, where is she?!” A thunderous roar swept down from above, ringing through Ning Zhuang’s ears.

Ning Zhuang looked up and saw Ning Tianyou hovering over the army on his Life Blood Beast, his eyes ablaze with fury fixed plummeting down on him.

Ning Zhuang had sent out his Soul Sense repeatedly to search the surroundings but could not locate Ning Man’er’s figure.

Before the shadow uprising, there was no doubt she’d been closely guarded, her soul firmly restrained, incapable of reciting any spell to flee.

Yet within moments, she vanished into those chilling shadows, and then the surrounding creatures fell under attack, while Soul Pet Masters collapsed one after another.

“I… I don’t know. She was just here moments ago,” Ning Zhuang stammered, beads of cold sweat rolling down his face.

He had felt the overwhelming darkness, but everything that followed left him completely lost.

Ning Tianyou suppressed his anger and expanded his sensing powers.

Soon enough, Ning Tianyou traced Ning Man’er’s presence near the edge of the barrier.

His gaze snapped in that direction, spotting Ning Man’er standing beneath the broken city walls, enshrouded by their shadows—so inconspicuous she was nearly undetectable.

On the shadows cast by the walls, there was a darker imprint—a silhouette faintly taking the shape of Ning Man’er.

The silhouette’s hair was unnaturally long, its back adorned with an eerily dark pair of wings. At the wings’ edges were sharp hooks, some substance dripping from them.

Ning Tianyou’s eyes scanned the army. Several soldiers’ throats appeared slashed by sharp instruments, though no blood flowed. Yet, on the hooked tips of the shadow’s wings, liquid continued to drip ominously.

“Dark Emperor!!!” Ning Tianyou roared.

He recognized this Soul Pet—it belonged to He Cang, the Dark Emperor.

However, the current Dark Emperor was leagues apart from its former self. It was now a predator lurking in the depths of shadow and darkness, having silently collected over five thousand lives…

Since the beginning, the Dark Emperor had likely been spreading its death domain throughout the area. Ning Tianyou simply hadn’t noticed that a Death God had been lurking near Ning Man’er, entrenched within his army.

From the city tower, Chu Mu watched as Ning Man’er delivered herself from the enemies’ encirclement, unsurprised by the turn of events.

Though he was Ning Man’er’s sole guardian, the true protector who remained constantly by her side was the Dark Emperor.

The Dark Emperor thrived on Ning Man’er’s nurturing aura, gaining strength far superior to Ning Tianyou’s army. Though it might not possess the might to directly confront Ning Tianyou and his forces, guaranteeing Ning Man’er’s safety and escaping unharmed posed no difficulty.

Now, the Dark Emperor, imbued with Ning Man’er’s fury, was fully unleashed, claiming countless lives in vengeance!
