Chapter 976: Defense Reasoning
At the court trial scene, Evelyn confidently pleaded not guilty to the crime for which she was charged.
There wasn't an ounce of hesitation or fear across her eyes. It was as if she was confident that she would receive the non-guilty verdict.
"Hoh, do you dare to say that the scene being displayed isn't you then?" Nicholas remained solemn and showed the recorded scenes of Evelyn committing the crime.
In the recorded scenes, one could see Evelyn killing numerous players despite their pleading for mercy and to let them go.
Looking at them, Evelyn was nonchalant. She simply turned her gaze toward the jury stands and clicked her tongue.
"Ahh, these two really managed to play me for a fiddle. To think that they had a trump card." She pursed her lips. "Had I known about that, then I would have demanded more than just being friends with Cool Wind. What a loss."
Outside the projected screen, both Xu Feng and Carmen twitched their mouths slightly. The projected screen recorded the player's voice, so both of them could hear what Evelyn had just uttered.
"I told you that she's very shameless and eccentric." Carmen took a deep breath and said.
Nodding in agreement, Xu Feng only had one adjective that could describe Evelyn perfectly: crazy.
Yes, she was crazy. Only a crazy person could behave in such a manner.
'Good thing she's only interested in my alias.' Xu Feng patted his chest lightly.
If he were to be admired or stalked by such a person, then he was destined to feel a chill every time she thought about him.
She was undergoing a court trial, and every word that Nicholas, the judge, said was critical to passing the aptitude test.
Yet not only was she in a daze, but she also disregarded her surroundings completely.
Shaking his head, Xu Feng decided to watch how Evelyn could overturn the guilty verdict.
"Defendant Evelyn, please answer the question." Nicholas held the gavel and slammed it down to get her attention. "Do you agree or do you deny the person in the recorded scene is you?"
"Your Honor, that person is indeed me," Evelyn admitted it honestly.
"Then the case is closed. You are guilty of the manslaughter and killing of protected species."
"Then that would be a mistrial, Your Honor."
"A mistrial, you say?" Nicholas paused the gavel midair and glanced at her in confusion. "You have just admitted the person committing the crime was in fact you. So how could it be a mistrial?"
Evelyn chuckled and said, "It's a mistrial because the mastermind isn't me. Yes, I have killed those, but they were all manipulated by the mastermind. To summarize, I am also a victim, and not the perpetrator."
"A victim?" Nicholas nearly laughed aloud and broke his Judge's role.
However, Evelyn didn't care about his reaction and proceeded to point at the two people in the jury stands.
"Lin Feng and Lunar Wraith are both people who committed the same crime in the battle royale incident and the killing of protected species. But such people get to be a jury. If they aren't being tried, then shouldn't I be deemed not guilty?"
Silence!
The court trial atmosphere turned silent. Nicholas didn't anticipate the defendant to be using the jurors in its defense.
To be honest, the jurors were constructed to create a live-like court trial. But it was obvious that it wouldn't be flawless. Some flaws would appear here and there, such as the disappearance of a prosecutor or a proper witness.
In this court trial, the Judge aka Nicholas, acted as both the prosecutor and witness, who used the recorded scene as the sole evidence.
Hence, he was stumped when Evelyn brought up Xu Feng and Carmen's matter.
Nevertheless, he wouldn't give in that easily.
"Even if they committed the manslaughter crime, they were innocent of the killing of protected species." Nicholas rebuked loudly.
Evelyn didn't know whether Xu Feng and Carmen had killed people in the battle royale or killed any protected species. She only took a gamble and believed their hands had to be stained with some blood to survive the rounds.
'Checkmate.' She flashed a sly grin after hearing Nicholas rebuking her. The latter had already fallen into her trap. As long as Nicholas brought up one crime was indeed the truth, she had already won.
"Your Honor, this case is already a mistrial. With the jurors committing the same crime as me, even if it's just one of them, that is enough to demonstrate the problem with the trial." Evelyn smirked.
"Hence, I demand the court to be judged as a mistrial. And based on this being a test of my willpower, the fact that I've found a flaw and avoided the guilty verdict. I'm sure Your Honor has to pass me in this aptitude test, right?"
Unable to refute the words, Judge Nicholas could only put up a complicated expression and ultimately slammed the gavel down.
"Defendant Evelyn is not guilty." He declared, cleverly omitting the mistrial reasoning alongside its evidence. He would also note this down and pay attention to improve the court trial scene. Every little detail must be spectacular to ensure incidents like this do not occur again.
Evelyn didn't sneer coldly and simply bowed her head slightly in respect to Judge Nicholas. At the end, she still had more aptitude tests to undergo, and offending him would be plain retarded.
Soon, the scene before Evelyn disappeared. By the time she reappeared, she noticed Xu Feng and Carmen sitting down from afar.
"What did I say, Guild Leader?" Carmen giggled softly and extended her hand. She gestured her hand a few times while Xu Feng exhaled softly.
"Ugh, a mistrial because of a placement error in the specific. What a way to beat the willpower aptitude test." He shook his head, retrieved a gold coin, and handed it over to Carmen.
Since it was Carmen who first mentioned Evelyn, he would have no other choice but to choose another candidate to beat the first aptitude test.
In the end, he chose Floral Witch, but based on the current circumstances, she still had a bit more progress till she could succeed.
Not every player in the area had a court trial. Some had other scenes, and Xu Feng held no interest in them either.
There was no point paying attention because one failure in the aptitude test meant they were eliminated.
