Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 55: The Apocalypse ArrivesOnly one day was left before the apocalypse that Su Jin had spoken of, and Lu Hao was preparing to go to the team and give some instructions before coming back.
He wasn’t a savior and couldn’t save so many people, only hoping that those in his team who followed his commands could survive this initial virus outbreak.
Yin Chengtian and the others were still wondering if Captain Lu had taken the wrong medicine today, as he strangely didn’t have them train. Moreover, he told them to go home after work at noon and to buy enough food, advising them not to go out in the evening.
Thinking back to the incident with Li Wei some time ago, none of the team members had too many doubts. Captain Lu wouldn’t harm them.
Lu Hao also wanted to take these team members to a safe place, but some of them had girlfriends or families. He couldn’t possibly stay with each family, so he had made such arrangements in advance.
Upon leaving the team, he went to Guo Yang’s office, but Xue Wanyi wasn’t there.
“He’s asleep at my place, what’s up? How come you have time to come here for tea today at this hour?” Guo Yang asked in surprise.
“After you finish work at noon, just go home, buy some food and water, and don’t go out tonight,” Lu Hao leaned on the sofa and told Guo Yang seriously.
Guo Yang slowly stood up, his expression one of surprise as he looked at Lu Hao. Did Lu Hao mean something might happen tonight?
“I got it.”Guo Yang sat back down with a grave look. He believed Lu Hao, which is why he felt the issue was so serious.
Guo Yang left with Lu Hao, not bothering to go back to work. He drove to the supermarket, bought carts full of supplies, and then returned home.
Xue Wanyi, who woke up looking confused, scratched his head in puzzlement upon seeing Guo Yang come back so early. However, Guo Yang was focused on sending messages on his phone and didn’t bother with him for the moment.
Guo Yang was pondering how to subtly remind Xiao Jin, Liao Yifan’s little sister, to stay safe. After seeing Xue Wanyi helping to bring in the water, he instantly thought of a way.
Taking advantage of Lu Hao leaving the house, Su Jin went to the temporary warehouse to collect 30 motorcycles into her space, and then went to the small supermarket she and Mao Zhihang had bought together, bringing all the supplies from the supermarket and the warehouse behind into her space.
After doing all this, it was almost noon. On her way back, Su Jin also bought a lot of vegetables, filled the trunk of the car, and then went home.
As a qualified hoarder, she knew it was important to stockpile as much as possible.
Looking at the crowd bustling along the streets, Su Jin felt a touch of lament. She had once posted in forums to urge everyone to prepare supplies, but no one believed it, and the post quickly sank without a trace, overshadowed by other trending topics.
Su Jin shook her head, casting aside these melancholic thoughts. The apocalypse would be a time of survival of the fittest; she couldn’t afford to think about these things anymore.
Throughout the afternoon, the family didn’t stop making food. They weren’t relaxed; on the contrary, they were too anxious. It seemed that only by keeping busy could they forget their nervousness.
As the evening approached, Su Jin had everyone enter the space while she and Lu Hao stayed outside.
In the distant G Province, Zhang Chuyang felt that the sunset looked strangely beautiful today. After work, he took a few photos on the street when his phone received a message on WeChat; it was from Su Jin.
Zhang Chuyang happily opened the message, but was stunned upon seeing the few words Su Jin had sent. He quickly hailed a taxi and rushed in the direction of home. He had a premonition that Su Jin’s words were true; Su Jin’s words were always true.
Su Jin only sent Zhang Chuyang a few words: “Don’t go out tonight.”
In the Y autonomous region, a police station that had once held Big Beard echoed with several gunshots, and Officer Zhao ran in panic down the hallway, not knowing what had happened.
When he returned from being out today, he discovered the unusually quiet police station, which at this time would usually be bustling with activity. He had thought that everyone had gone off duty, but the scene that met his eyes upon entering the lobby left him dumbfounded.
The normally bright floor was covered in blood, the walls were splattered with blood, and there were scattered human tissues. Xiao Wang, his own follower, was being gnawed on the ground by Director Chen; Xiao Wang had already stopped breathing, allowing Director Chen to bite into his neck unabated.
Several bodies were also lying on the desks, and from their attire, they all seemed to be his colleagues. But when they stood up, faces smeared with blood and ran towards Officer Zhao, he suddenly remembered what Big Beard, whom he had interrogated, had said: “You can’t let them bite you!”
Without a moment’s hesitation, he ran outwards, firing several shots at Director Chen, who was closest to him. The bullets hit Director Chen, but he showed no reaction and continued to lunge at him, face covered in blood!
Officer Zhao suddenly remembered what Big Beard had said, that only a hit to the head would kill them, so he aimed at Director Chen’s head and fired a shot, and Director Chen went down with a thud.
The gunshots attracted even more “people.” They either ran swiftly or stumbled forward, all heading in Officer Zhao’s direction!
Officer Zhao felt as if he were in a nightmare, running incessantly. His forehead was drenched in sweat, and his lungs burned as though they were about to burst.
However, when he reached the entrance of the police station and heard the successive screams outside, he didn’t know why he stopped.
This must be a nightmare; how could such a thing happen? Right, a dream! He needed to wake up quickly; maybe he could wake up soon. For breakfast this morning, he would eat soy milk and deep-fried dough sticks from downstairs. Every time he ate a bun on his way to work, Xiao Wang would disdainfully hand him a piece of Green Arrow chewing gum he had prepared in advance.
It was only when a sharp pain coursed through his shoulder that Officer Zhao realized that what he was experiencing was not a dream. Xiao Wang, who had died moments ago, somehow was gnawing on his shoulder, tearing off a chunk of flesh!
At that moment, the other “people” running behind swarmed over and knocked the stunned Officer Zhao to the ground. Blood seeped out through the gates of the entrance…
Su Jin and Lu Hao sat bored on the living room sofa watching TV, but as they watched, the screen broadcasting the news suddenly filled with static.
The crackling sound was giving Su Jin a headache; she hated this kind of signal-less noise, so Lu Hao quickly turned off the TV.
A scream came from outside, and Lu Hao’s hand, holding the remote control, froze mid-air.
Su Jin also immediately stood up, pulling Lu Hao with her to the second floor to try to see where the scream had come from.
As they were climbing the stairs, they heard several screams, some close by, some distant, along with an intermittent chorus of barking dogs.
“Xiao Jin, it seems, it has really come,”
Su Jin felt Lu Hao’s hand tighten around hers. She looked at Lu Hao in confusion, only to hear his voice come through the darkness: “It’s good, this time, I haven’t lost you.”
Meanwhile, Zhang Chuyang was desperately holding his door shut; a person outside in a yellow delivery uniform was ceaselessly scratching at the door, trying to push it open.
He was such an idiot! Barely heeding Su Jin’s warning not to go out, why on earth did he order takeout? The deliveryman outside the door seemed identical to the rabid man they had encountered before. Hearing the rising and falling screams in the hallway, the “deliveryman” outside seemed to be drawn away. Zhang Chuyang banged the door shut, fastened the lock, then still shaken, dragged chairs and stools to barricade the door.
Words that Su Jin had said, once again, had come true!
