Chapter 2406: Chapter 2407: Rejected Chapter 2406: Chapter 2407: Rejected “Hello, what can I do for you?”

Seeing Lin Yi come in, the on-duty officer asked.

“Hello, I’m from the Xinshan branch office, and I came to inquire about a case.”

Realizing that Lin Yi was a fellow officer, the on-duty officer stood up, appearing more relaxed.

“What happened, an inter-district case?”

“It’s not confirmed yet. We have a case that might be connected to one of yours, so I came over to check it out.”

“I’ll take you to the Criminal Investigation Department. You can ask about the specifics there.”

“Sounds good.”

Guided by the officer, Lin Yi reached the second floor’s Criminal Investigation Department.

Even before entering the room, he could hear voices and laughter coming from inside.

This situation wasn’t much different from the Xinshan branch office; when there’s nothing urgent, the officers tend to gather and shoot the breeze.

Arriving at the door, Lin Yi glanced inside and noticed five people in a smoky haze, all heavy smokers.

Seeing a colleague bring in a stranger, the five men stopped their conversation.

“What’s the matter?”

The man who spoke was sitting at a desk, the oldest among the five.

In such circumstances, usually the one who speaks first is the leader.

“Captain Liu, this colleague is from the Xinshan branch office. He wanted to check on the case of Wang Jiasu from a few days ago, so I brought him here,” said the officer before introducing Lin Yi.

“This is our chief, Liu Wenjie.”

“Hello, I’m Lin Yi.”

Liu Wenjie nodded indifferently.

“You want to look into that wealthy businessman’s case?”

“Yes, the Wang Jiasu case.”

“The deceased committed suicide; the case has already been closed,” Liu Wenjie checked his watch. “By now, I guess the body has been cremated. What else do you want to investigate?”

“I have a feeling there’s something fishy about it, possibly not a suicide, but a homicide.”

As soon as these words were spoken, the other four all looked towards Liu Wenjie, their expressions somewhat amused and even unnatural.

Liu Wenjie’s expression also became somewhat grim as he glanced at Lin Yi coldly.

“Do you mean to say, you think there’s a problem with the case we handled, so you want to take it on yourself? Or perhaps, you think you’re better than all of us here?”

“That’s not what I mean. It’s just during the suspicion phase, so I want to take a look at the files.”

Liu Wenjie sized up Lin Yi, “You must be on the take from the victim’s family, right?”

“Huh? Taking a bribe?”

“After the incident, the victim’s family kept insisting to us that someone had harmed Wang Jiasu, demanding we reinvestigate. But the fact is, he died of electrocution in the bath when a hair dryer fell into the tub. Yet the family keeps on clamoring about a conspiracy.”

Liu Wenjie looked at Lin Yi, trying to use his powerful presence to intimidate him.

“Did the victim’s family come to you, asking you to further investigate under your own authority, and that’s why you’ve come to me?”

“This has nothing to do with the victim’s family; I came here on my own accord.”

“Fine, I won’t make it hard for you. Do you have any authorization from above?”

Liu Wenjie said, “If there’s authorization from above saying that you are to reinvestigate the case, I will definitely cooperate. Without it, I have to question your motives.”

“Looking at your stance, it seems you don’t wish to provide the files.”

“I didn’t say that. Everything must go through proper channels. As long as you have the authorization documents, all is well. Otherwise, I’m sorry to say, but these are confidential files, and you’re not cleared to view them at your level.”

Liu Wenjie waved his hand impatiently, “If there’s nothing else, you can leave. Stop loitering around here.”

Lin Yi just smiled, said nothing, and turned to leave.

“Heh…”

A young man sneered, “This kid is really thick-headed, barging in here demanding case files. Who does he think he is? Even if their team leader came, he wouldn’t have such clout. What a piece of work.”

“Alright, just ignore him. He’s probably just been paid to do a job,” Liu Wenjie said indifferently:

“These rich folks really are clueless, entrusting a minor cop with their affairs. Can’t figure out what they’re thinking.”

“Desperate times call for desperate measures, haha…”

“The kind I can’t stand the most are those who act all high and mighty here, as if I could ever mess up after handling cases for so many years. They should take a good look at themselves first.”

Liu Wenjie waved his hand in annoyance and lit up another cigarette:

“Enough about him, where were we just now in our conversation? Let’s continue.”

“It was the case with the second-hand car, where they found a body inside…”

“Right right right, that’s the one. Let me pick up where you left off.”

Liu Wenjie changed his posture and excitedly continued the tale.

But a few minutes hadn’t passed before a female officer stood at the door.

“Captain Liu, the leader has asked you to stop by his office.”

“Director Ma wants me?” Liu Wenjie paused, “Did he say what about?”

“No, just that he wants you to come over.”

“Alright, I’ll head there now.”

After the female officer left, Liu Wenjie muttered, “What could Director Ma want with me all of a sudden?”

“I just remembered!” a young man spoke up:

“Didn’t Director Zhou retire a few days ago? That position is currently vacant, maybe they’re considering promoting you.”

Liu Wenjie’s face lit up with joy, feeling it was very likely, but still he said:

“It’s not very likely, my seniority isn’t quite there yet.”

“What does seniority have to do with it? These days it’s all about ability. Captain Liu, you’re capable. It’s only natural for you to move up to a director’s position.”

“Right right right, go check it out, don’t keep Director Ma waiting anxiously.”

“Sure, I’ll go right now. If this really happens, I’ll treat you all to a meal later.”

“Haha, then we’ll be waiting for the good news from Captain Liu.”

Liu Wenjie straightened his clothes and went happily towards the third floor.

Knock knock knock—

“Come in.”

At the door, Liu Wenjie knocked, and a voice came from inside.

The door creaked open, and the smile on Liu Wenjie’s face abruptly ceased.

He saw two people sitting on the couch drinking tea.

One of them was their top leader, Ma Zhengxian, and the other was the young police officer from before.

Seeing Lin Yi here, Liu Wenjie felt a surge of anger, not expecting to be reported on.

But soon, he sensed something was amiss.

The disparity in their statuses was so vast; they couldn’t possibly be sitting together drinking tea.

This strange scene was baffling.

“Liu Wenjie, what’s the matter with you! When someone comes to investigate a case, you’re supposed to cooperate, not drive them away. Are you still fit to serve? If not, step down!”

Liu Wenjie was scolded into silence, and instinctively glanced at Lin Yi.

Whooosh—

Lin Yi blew gently on the steam rising from his teacup, taking a leisurely sip.

Liu Wenjie started to panic, grumbling internally:

Could it be he has some powerful backing?
