The custodian became serious after hearing what she said. He thought about her situation and said, “Don’t aim too high. Just set a moral bottom line and never cross it.”
“And remember that whatever moral dilemma you’re experiencing is only because of the divine flesh. The dilemma is not from you, and you’re fine.”
“Have more faith in yourself. Don’t think too much, just do.”
She shook her head and said, “If only it were that easy. If it were that easy, it wouldn’t be called a crisis of faith.”
She wasn’t optimistic about her chances of crossing this tribulation at all. She said, “Don’t worry though. I promise to kill myself before I become a danger to everyone else.”
This is a strange thing to hear from her because she used to be an optimistic and cheerful person. But the divine flesh has affected her way of thinking and her emotions.
The custodian recognized the threat, so he knew that the situation was dangerous. He said to her, “Maybe I should chain you up. That way we can prevent you from going on a rampage.”
She nodded in agreement and said, “I think that’s a good idea. I should spend that time in solitude meditating on my oath to the god of justice.”
The custodian’s eye twitched. What he said about locking her up was a test to her. It was a test to determine her level of resolve, and she failed woefully.
She was supposed to say that she didn’t need to be tied up. That would prove that she still had confidence in herself. But by the looks of things, she was very close to giving up on her will to live.
The terrifying thing is that she didn’t notice this dangerous attitude of hers. She was truly deep in her affliction. Any moment now her inner demon might manifest by turning her into it.
The custodian decided to prepare a potion to calm her thoughts immediately. Unfortunately, he couldn’t do that because Legion seemed to have survived the assimilation process. He had to finish turning the new recruit into a full-fledged lamp bearer.
The next step was the oath of allegiance to the god of justice. The new recruit had to swear that oath while he and the captain served as witnesses.
For that, he went into the sealed room with the captain. Then he brought out some tools from the bag he was carrying and built a small altar in front of Legion.
Legion made the oath, and the god of justice responded. The altar lit up and produced a golden rune, which flew towards Legion and imprinted itself on his chest.
This marked the official appointment of Levi as a godclad. The custodian should have been glad about this. He was eager earlier to see how well Levi would perform, but now he had other things on his mind.
He removed the shackles on Legion and said, “Go home and rest. Come back tomorrow to meet me for a tutorial on how to use your abilities.”
The captain also had something to say. She said, “You also need to be introduced to the others and assigned to a squad. I’ll do that after your tutorial.”
The custodian rushed back into his laboratory after saying that. He went to prepare a strong potion for the captain.
As for the captain, she led Legion out of the underground and handed him over to someone else. This person took him out of the building and brought him home.
He had just become a godclad, so he was in a delicate state. They didn’t want to leave him to himself as he could lose control. So his escort didn’t leave his house immediately.
Legion didn’t like the babysitting, but he didn’t complain. He decided to pretend that he was tired and slept.
Along the way home and up to the time he slept, the lamp bearer that was assigned to him kept warning him.
The man kept saying, “Whatever you hear in your mind, don’t believe it. Keep your mind free from distractions and do not succumb to temptation.”
He had heard this warning many times before, so he would rather pretend to be tired and sleep than hear the man drone on and on about the dangers of falling into temptation. Not that the man was not right to insist on the dangers. Falling into temptation is a real danger to a godclad.
Falling into temptation and suffering from a backlash are the two dangerous internal enemies of godclads. Both of them can lead to death. The difference is what type of death the godclad would encounter.
A godclad is in a precarious position. They have assimilated a powerful external object into their existence and gained power from it. In order to continue having this power and to remain alive, they must maintain a balance with the divine flesh.
They can’t give the divine flesh full rein of their existence. They must not fall for the temptation of gaining more power in a short amount of time, or they would be assimilated by the divine flesh, and they would mutate.
Godclads must also not restrict the divine flesh too much. They have to act according to the principles of their path in order to keep a favorable connection with the divine flesh.
If the godclad refuses to use the power they gained from the divine flesh according to the principles of the origin of the divine flesh, then the divine flesh will reject them, which will lead to a backlash.
A backlash will cause instant death. But it rarely happens because humans are more likely to do anything for power and fall into temptation than to restrict themselves.
This power is not fake either. It is real power granted by the complete fusion of man and divinity.
The godclad will grow stronger quickly, which will tempt them to continue the fusion. They will enjoy their power for a while. Then they will turn into a powerful monster.
